Phototherapy FAQs

  • nbUVB (Narrow Band Ultraviolet B therapy) is a common treatment that uses UVB light. It works by reducing the skin's immune system response, and has been proven to be effective for various types of conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis and eczema. Treatments are covered by MSP, and the goggles are a one time purchase out-of-pocket.

  • Your doctor may suggest phototherapy if they believe the medical benefits outweigh the potential side effects. Benefits of phototherapy include reduction of inflammation, and flare of symptoms like eczema and dermatitis. Side effects vary from skin redness to burns or blisters.

  • Obtain a referral from your primary care provider for phototherapy, or specifically for a skin condition that can be treated with nbUVB treatments. The dermatologist will determine if phototherapy is an appropriate treatment for you.

  • Phototherapy is NOT a cure. However, many patients have had either noticeable improvements with their skin condition or felt relief.
